There are
multiple reasons for undertaking dental procedures. It could
be for dental maintenance, disease treatment
restoration or even for cosmetic reasons. The primary
aim is to improve dental health and for aesthetic
improvement. Cosmetic improvement of teeth is increasingly popular.
Several procedures are available from most, if not all, denstists.
Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are a useful procedure to improve teeth appearance.
Early porcelain veneers, made from aluminous or reinforced feldspathic
porcelains, were not sufficiently strong. Newer techniques improved
this by firmly bonding the porcelain to the underlying teeth,
making it stronger and more durable, and thus, making it a more
successful and pleasing restorative option. When compared to
its composite counterpart, porcelain veneers are more advantageous
as they are stronger, more natural looking, and last longer.
Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening is the most commonly requested cosmetic dentistry
procedure. It is one of the several ways to improve the appearance
of teeth by removing stains and discolorations through various
processes. Whitening can be done by use of whitening toothpastes,
scaling and polishing, bleaching, enamel microabrasion and sometimes
by placement of crowns and veneers.
There are whitening kits available in the market, ready for
consumer use with minimal guidance. A dentist-assisted whitening
procedure nevertheless is more advisable as proper protection
and technique can be safely employed to bring out the most of
the process.
The area of color change measurement is still being explored.
More accurate devices to measure changes in teeth color is expected
to improve teeth whitening products and procedures.
Conclusion
Dental procedures are rapidly changing as more and more information
is gathered through relentless research. Further development
of present technology promises the dentists and patients more
effective, safer, longer lasting and better cosmetic results
in the future.
